Kindred ("we," "us," "our," or "Company") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our application. Kindred is operated by Kindred App Ltd (company registration pending). For any questions about this policy or your data, contact us at support@kindred-app.co.uk.
We collect information you provide directly:
We use collected information to:
We implement industry-standard security measures including encryption, secure authentication, and strict access controls. Your data is protected in transit and at rest (see "Data Storage & Encryption" below). However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We recommend avoiding uploading anything you would not be comfortable storing digitally. For highly sensitive documents such as passwords or crypto seed phrases, use a dedicated secure storage service — Kindred is not designed to store those. You are responsible for maintaining your password confidentiality.
Your data is stored across two separate, secured systems:
Why we store media off-site: Keeping your media in a separate, purpose-built storage system — rather than on the servers that run the app — reduces the attack surface, improves resilience and durability, and means a problem with the website can never expose your files. The storage system has its own access credentials that are completely independent from the app.
Encryption: All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) while moving between your device, the app, and the storage system. Media files are encrypted at rest by the storage provider. Private files are never publicly listed or browsable — they can only be accessed through short-lived, signed links issued on demand and tied to your authenticated session.
Who can see your data: Access is strictly scoped. Each family's media is stored under its own isolated namespace, and access is enforced by row-level security on every request. You can only ever see your own family's content — no other family, member, or user can access your photos, recordings, vault, or letters. Items you mark as private are visible only to you. Administrators can view aggregate counts (for example, total photos stored) but cannot read your private content, vault entries, or letters.
Seamless to you: Because media is fetched securely on demand, the experience feels exactly the same as if files were stored in the app — you won't notice any difference when viewing or uploading. The security happens behind the scenes.
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to:
Contact us at support@kindred-app.co.uk to exercise these rights.
When you delete your account, all your database records are permanently removed within minutes. This includes your profile, memories, voice recordings, photos, recipes, letters, vault entries, journal entries, comments, family memberships, and subscription records.
Uploaded media files (photos, videos, voice recordings, and documents) held in off-site encrypted storage are queued for secure deletion and removed by an automated process that confirms the file is gone before marking the record complete. Media deletion is typically processed within 30 days. A deletion request is created automatically when you delete your account — you do not need to contact us separately. If you need faster deletion, email support@kindred-app.co.uk.
We retain minimal Stripe customer records (transaction IDs, billing dates) only where legally required for accounting and tax purposes. This data is managed by Stripe under their privacy policy. We do not retain any of your personal content, memories, or family data after deletion is complete.
Data exports include your text content and references to uploaded media (file links), not the media files themselves.
Content preservation on cancellation or downgrade: Cancelling a subscription, downgrading to Free, a failed payment, a trial expiring, or account inactivity never deletes your stored content. All memories, photos, voice recordings, recipes, letters, journal entries, and vault entries remain fully preserved. Full deletion only occurs when you explicitly delete your account from Account Settings and confirm with the word DELETE.
Kindred uses AI to generate optional prompt suggestions that inspire you to write down memories, stories, and recipes. Here's what you should know:
If you have questions about how AI is used in Kindred, contact us at support@kindred-app.co.uk.
We use Stripe for payment processing and follow their privacy practices. When you order a photo book, selected photos and details are shared with our print partner to produce and ship your book. We do not share your personal data with third parties except as necessary to provide our services or comply with law.
Your vault information is strictly private and only accessible to you via role-based access controls. Trusted executors or family members designated by you can submit a request for access to your vault after your passing. The request requires passcode verification, evidence upload (such as a death certificate), and manual review by a Kindred administrator. If approved, the administrator chooses which specific vault sections to release — access is read-only, scoped to selected sections, revocable, and may expire. Evidence documents are uploaded to private storage and are only visible to platform administrators for review. Nothing unlocks automatically. Kindred does not automatically verify death. Passcode verification confirms email access only, not legal authority. Kindred is not a will, probate service, legal executor service, death verification service, or official legal vault. Letters can be sent to recipients by email after explicit author confirmation (date-based and manual letters) or after manual admin review and approval (on-death letters). On-death letter release is manual-review only — Kindred does not automatically send or release letters. Letter content sent to recipients includes only the letter itself, the author's name, and Kindred branding — no other family content is shared. Letters are not legal documents. We recommend keeping formal legal arrangements outside the app and consulting a solicitor for estate planning.
Kindred is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn we have collected such information, we will promptly delete it.
